Hello! This is a FAQ is for those interested in the PATREON for Ultimate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and was last updated on December 7th 2014!

What is UTMNT?

UTMNT stands for Ultimate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
What is UTMNT, exactly?
UTMNT is a marriage of the Eastman and Laird TMNT property with the idea behind the Ultimate Marvel Comics line, which features re-imagined and updated versions of the TMNT and their friends and foes from all the different versions of the TMNT property from the Fred Wolf animated series to Archie to the film saga and more.
So you plan to feature everyone from all the different series?
Almost all of them, yes. The Next Mutation at this point, doesn’t factor in, but that could always change.
So what exactly do you mean then? Who do you have in the pipeline past issue one of UTMNT?
We have a few ones, actually. Granted it would be fleshed out in full complete stories/arcs, but we have plans to introduce Baxter Stockman (the genius and the fly), The Foot Clan, The Shredder, Krang, The Utroms, Beebop and Rocksteady, Triceratons, Fugitoid, Casey Jones, April O’Neil, Maligna, Armaggon, Old Hobb, The Foot Mystics, Cherabue and much more. These should be heavily prefaced though that, imagine this like a television show: The first season won’t get to everyone I’ve listed. The reason being that in our minds, the first season ends with the classic showdown from Eastman and Laird’s TMNT # 1 between the Turtles and the Shredder/Oruku Saki. Season two would feature the fall-out from that, and maybe tackle the TCRI/Utrom/Turtles in Space storyline with Return to New York, etc.
Cool! So, do you own the rights of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
Golly, no! I should HEAVILY stress that I do NOT own the rights to the TMNT. This is purely fan-based work!!! We are only asking for funding to pay Eryck for his time and effort, or for the production of rewards for Patreon backers. We are NOT asking for money to help publish a book for sale or profit in any way, shape, or form. If you want legalese, or the closest thing we can provide, here ya go: br/>

So you need our support?
Yes. We need your support any way we can get it. While we prefer you would donate some money to us via Patreon, if you love the comic and want to donate your time by sharing the comic via Twitter, Google +, Facebook, Dig It, Reddit, etc, then that is just as equally important!
What is Patreon?
Patreon is public crowd-funding on a bit of a smaller level. It is asking people to donate a certain amount per month for as long as they wish, and they can get rewards or tiers, ala Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, etc. Or long story short (too late), check out their About Us Page, or see the Patreon FAQ.
But wait, what is the money that people donate to Patreon for?
The money is for paying Eryck Webb for his time and artistic skill. This is akin to paying someone to commission drawing your favorite superhero or what not at a comic book convention, etc. I am commissioning Eryck every month to draw 4 pages of UTMNT.
You mentioned somewhere that if you don’t get enough support, the comic won’t go beyond Issue # 1. Is this true? Because I thought I saw on your twitter and/or Patreon feeds that Issue # 2 is happening!
Originally this was correct. I love and adore the TMNT, but also have my own original characters that I want to share with the world. While UTMNT is fulfilling a flight of fancy to mark something off my bucket list, at the same time, the response to UTMNT has been amazing from those on twitter and via e-mail.. just that no one is donating. By changing up some of the patreon rewards (see: offering a physical copy of the book and prints) I am hoping to entice people who donate smaller amounts up to a year to keep the book going. If Issue # 2 does not continue to do well by the mid-way point, UTMNT will meet cancellation.
What type of rewards are there via Patreon? Meaning: What do I get for supporting you and becoming a Patron of UTMNT?
We have a few different types of rewards out there. The most important thing is that donations are needed for the production of art, not for publishing a physical book, though that does factor in a bit for reward backers. So we offer prints, and a physical copy of a comic book you can hold in your hand, and access to an activity stream that features scripts, updates and more, but beyond that, the ultimate reward, no pun intended is to keep the book going and insight into those pages as they come out.
I really want a physical copy of Ultimate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but think that paying $12.00+ a month for a year via Patreon is insane!
I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but at the end of the day, the reality is that the idea of offering a physical book version of UTMNT is considered bonus/gravy to the idea of keeping the comic itself going. Upon consulting with an accountant acquaintance and also a lawyer, conducting a risk analysis, someone paying for at least 3 pages and the production of the book is the best way to keep the comic going and have it mean something like, say a physical printed book in your hand.
Have you thought about engaging Kevin Eastman, Jim Lawson or other TMNT artists? Wouldn't it be cheaper to hire them to do the book instead of Eryck? I REALLY want my physical copy of the comic book.
First and most important, UTMNT is nothing without Eryck Webb. Beyond that, even for covers, Jim Lawson so far is the only person who’s rates are reasonable and has graciously donated time and talent towards this. While I wish we could engage others like Kevin Eastman, those like Kevin Eastman are on the pricey side, and others who have done TMNT books for Mirage for a myriad of reasons have advised us no (Michael Dooney and AC Farley) but wished us luck on our endeavors.

Long story short (again, too late), generally a 50+ page book costs around $4k to produce. If we would use Jim Lawson, etc that price would jump up to around $13k. Also, and I can’t stress this enough, while having someone do a cover here and there, Eryck is the book, simple as that. 🙂

I'm sorry but $12.00 is insane, no matter how you slice it just for a physical copy of the book. I'm not paying that.
That is a bummer, but again, I understand. The reality of the situation though is that you are paying for the artwork and not just the book itself. If you still wish to contest this a bit further, then pardon how rude this may come off, but unless you are doing some super cool way of doing math real good, then I, including parties that have assisted me (such as accounting experts) but smarter than I at mathematical theorems, then please, we need to tap into whatever insight you have because multiple parties are not seeing it so please e-mail me.
What if I don’t want to donate via Patreon monthly? What If I want some of the things that you offered, but don’t want to pay that much?
This ties into one of the answers above a bit, but I am interested in offering “one-time” donations via PayPal and getting some rewards in-turn instead of Patreon, but the simple fact is that, and I don’t think people would love this, but for those who want one offs would generally pay the amount of at least 1 page of UMNT’s production costs and then the production costs of any books, prints, etc that they want. It’s the only logical way to keep UTMNT going! Not to say I can not be proven wrong! If you are interested in something like this, please e-mail me.
What do we get if we donate though, besides keeping the UTMNT comic going/help with production?
You get access to lots of cool stuff! Like what, you ask? Well lemme tell yah! Patrons will get bonus comics, illustrations, scripts, and other behind-the-scenes material (in private, patrons-only posts)! You see stuff in progress, early, and sometimes even exclusively.
What if I want something that isn’t offered as a reward for donating/supporting UTMNT on Patreon?
Then please by all means please contact us! I want to do anything I can in my power to provide.

If we get enough support that would showcase beyond the first issue, any Patreon support will be for the ongoing production of Ultimate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as an on-going web comic.
